• Gelco Deluxe Series caps: wind-bent mounting brackets. The Deluxe Series lid is solid stainless, but the mounting brackets are lighter gauge than what you’d see on a custom-fabricated cap. After a few nor’easters off the Atlantic, those brackets can bend just enough to let the cap sit crooked. We routinely see this on homes near the boardwalk in Long Beach. A crooked cap gaps the flue, and wind-blown rain rides right in. We straighten and re-set the bracket, or replace it with a heavier aftermarket bracket when the original’s done.
• Gelco Stainless Steel Multi-Flue caps: screen plugging at the mesh line. The mesh screen on the multi-flue models is fine enough to keep birds out, which is the point. But with a mixed hardwood burn and an under-swept flue, creosote droplets collect on that mesh like morning fog on a screen door.
